LUNG CANCER AMONG INDIANS OF THE SOUTHWESTERN UNITED STATES

Abstract
In a 7-year study, a striking absence of lung cancer was found among Indians of the Southwestern United States. Cancer of the stomach was discovered in 13 Indians during the study period; this is significant since the incidence of gastric and pulmonary malignancy is similar among Caucasians. Explanation of the deficit of lung cancer may relate to minimal exposure to industrial fumes, infrequent use of cigarettes or hereditary factors.
