Electrophoretic and Ultracentrifugal Analyses of Antipneumococcal Horse Sera

Abstract
Summary: Ultracentrifugal and electrophoretic analyses have been made of a number of antipneumococcal horse sera and concentrates obtained from different sources. The antibody has been found associated with a heavy globulin component which is apparently the same in all the sera examined. No evidence was found for lighter pneumococcal antibodies. In all but one instance antibody activity has resided only in the electrophoretic γ-globulin. In this exceptional serum, drawn from a horse which had just begun to furnish antibody, the activity was found in a new component, T′, intermediate between the γ globulin and the T-component that characterizes horse antitoxic sera. It could not be determined whether or not this new component would persist with prolonged hyperimmunization.
