First demonstration of 1580 nm wavelength band WDM transmission for doubling usable bandwidth and suppressing FWM in DSF

Abstract
The authors demonstrate WDM transmission in the unexplored 1580 nm band, for the first time, using newly developed gain-shifted EDFAs. By using the 1580 nm band, equally-spaced, eight 10 Gbit/s WDM channel, repeaterless transmission over 160 km dispersion-shifted fibre is achieved without any four-wave mixing degradation.
