Much more researh is needed on how best to teach the clinical arts, on how to measure clinical ability, and on how to make faculty and house staff more effective teachers of clinical medicine. Until the medical schools undertake this research and make the indicated reforms there is the ever-present danger that the federal government will take on, by default, the task of more adequately fulfilling the needs of physicians and the community.
