Filter-Paper Electrophoresis of Serum Proteins from Small Animals

Abstract
Normal rat serum consists of 5 components: albumin and [alpha]1, [alpha]2,[beta]1 and [gamma][gamma] globulins. The [gamma] globulin is relatively low in concn. If rats are infected with Trichinella spiralis, the serum shows a gradual decrease of albumin. Normal mouse serum resolves itself into the usual 5 components. The sera from mice bearing spontaneous mammary carcinoma exhibit a gradual decrease in albumin as the disease advances. Opossum serum protein separates into 5 fractions. The turtle, mud puppy, frog, and salamander sera exhibit 7, 7, 10, and 3 components, respectively. However, the total protein concn. in the serum of these animals is low when compared to that in the serum of mammals. The fastest-moving component corresponding to that in the sera of mammals is absent. The mobility of the components is low when compared to the rate of migration of the proteins of mammalian serum.
