Abstract
A grain‐oriented polycrystalline thoriated tungsten emitter is described which demonstrates vastly improved emission characteristics over ordinary emitters of the same type. The factor of four improvement in electron emission in high vacuum is almost entirely the result of an increase in A value from four to seventeen. The Richardson work function φ of the improved emitter is essentially the same as that of the ordinary one. A comparison is made of the efficiencies of two cesium‐neutralized thermionic converters, identical in every respect except that one contains the improved emitter and the other an ordinary one. The measured improved factor of three in conversion efficiency is in close agreement with the predicted factor based on the difference in A values. Keywords
