Bi‐modal sensitivity to monochromatic light by the mud snailIlyanassa obsoleta

Abstract
Under laboratory conditions the mud snail Ilyanassa obsoleta exhibits a pronounced positive behavioral response to monochromatic light. The response spectrum for‐this positive phototaxis has maxima at 480 nm and 560–580 nm. The threshold intensities for this response are 2.06 x 10‐7 /μW/cm2 for 480 nm and 2.18 × 10‐7 μW/cm2 for 580 nm. These results are suggestive of Ilyanassa's possessing two visual pigments with different absorption maxima.
