Abstract
The energy and width of the shape resonance in e- collisions are calculated for molecules physisorbed on a metallic surface. The breaking of the molecular symmetry by the surface is found to increase the resonance width as compared to that for collisions in the gas phase. The metallic image potential is found to broaden the resonance and lower its energy. The calculated broadening and energy shift agree in order of magnitude with the observed values.
