Abstract
The passing of the 1994 Education Act was a vitally important milestone in the history of initial teacher education in Britain in that it marked the formal separation of the initial teacher education system from the rest of higher education (HE). In the future, funding for all forms of initial teacher education in England (though not inWales) will be the responsibility of the Teacher Training Agency (TTA) rather than the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) which funds all other higher education.
