Magnetic-Dipole Character of the 3500-Å System of Formaldehyde

Abstract
The 3480‐Å absorption band of formaldehyde, 0+2v6′←0, is photographed with linearly polarized radiation in an electrostatic field of 5 kV/cm. From the observed Stark splitting of the lines, this transition is shown to be magnetic dipole in character, in complete accord with the earlier conclusions of Callomon and Innes.
