Abstract
For pt.II see ibid., vol.7, p.L359 (1974). Examines the effects of an external homogeneous electric field on the process of resonant ionisation of atoms interacting with a metal surface. These effects considerably reduce the probability of electron tunnelling into the metal when the electric field is directed towards the surface. The process of field ionisation of the atom is also considered. The atom-metal interaction enhances the probability of field ionisation.
