Abstract
The adsorption of the inert gases on charcoal is considered from the viewpoint of charge-transfer no-bond complex formation, and interaction integrals are calculated from the heats of adsorption at effectively zero coverage. The numerical values obtained in this way are compatible with similar data in the literature. It is shown that the linear relationship previously reported between the heat of adsorption of the inert gases on charcoal and the polarizabilities of the gases can be satisfactorily derived on the basis of this theory, and arises to a large extent from the comparatively high ionization potentials of these elements.
