Abstract
Literature (412 references) up to the end of 1941, bearing on the adrenal-gonad relationship, is discussed: 1. Effects of the gonads on the adrenals (sex dimorphism in the adrenals, changes in them associated with the reproductive cycle, effects of gonadectomy, effects of gonadal hormones). 2. Effects of the adrenals on the gonads (effects of adrenalectomy and of adrenal extracts). 3. Adrenal-like activity of the gonads (effects of sexual condition on survival after adrenalectomy, changes in water retention during the reproductive cycle, corticoid effects of gonadal hormones). 4. Gonad-like activity of the adrenals (gonad-like effects of the adrenals in exptl. animals, adreno-genital syndrome, effects of cortical extracts and hormones on the accessory reproductive organs and secondary sexual characters, presence of gonadal hormones and analogous substances in the adrenals, excretion of androgens and estrogens after gonadectomy and in adrenal dysfunction).
