Abstract
In a double-blind study of uncomplicated cystitis, amoxicillin appeared (by bacteriologic criteria) to be similar to ampicillin in efficacy. Because of superior gastrointestinal absorption of amoxicillin and resulting prolonged high concentrations in urine, these results were obtained with a reduction in the dosage of amoxicillin to one-third that of ampicillin and an increase in the interval between doses of both antibiotics to 8 hr. The data require confirmation with a larger patient population.
