Conflict versus consolidation of memory traces to explain "retrograde amnesia" produced by ECS.

Abstract

Rats learned to run from a dark to a light compartment to avoid foot shock. Then the shock was delivered in the light compartment instead, and S received ECS after each trial. Learning to stop performing the "avoidance response" which was now punished was faster, the sooner ECS followed each trial. It is concluded that although ECS may produce retrograde amnesia, many attempts to demonstrate it have not been adequate since they did not control for ECS-induced fear.
