Feeding Behavior and Food-Consumption Rates of a Captive California Murre

Abstract
A captive California murre (Uria aalge Californica) was fed rainbow trout 3 to 9 in. long. Surface swimming was by alternately stroking the feet, and all subsurface swimming was by wing action. All fish were swallowed head first, and most were swallowed on the surface. Fish 9 in. long appeared to be the maximum size the murre could successfully swallow. The murre did not attempt to dive after fish in darkness. The murre consumed on average of 28% of his body weight in fish per day while maintaining an average body weight of 650g. During starvation, the murre lost 2 8 to 5 7% of his original body weight per flay.
