Abstract
1. Twenty-five named species and varieties of Phlebotomus are recorded from the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, and the methods which have been used in collecting are described. 2. Observations are recorded on distribution, bionomics, colouration, feeding habits and other matters. 3. Flagellates undergoing “anterior” development have been found in specimens of P. langeroni var. orientalis which had fed on a case of post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis. 4. A vast subterranean environment is described which exists in the Sudan plains and is constituted by holes and cracks in the ground. It is suggested that this is the main habitat of sandflies in the wilderness.
