Abstract
The cross section for the capture of an electron by an incident proton from a ground-state hydrogen atom is evaluated using relativistic classical mechanics and the Thomas approach (1927) involving two successive binary encounters. It is found that the capture cross section falls off as Ekin-3 with increasing kinetic energy Ekin of the incident proton referred to the target atom. Keywords
