Abstract
Subjective workload is of increasing importance in user-machine systems, as the role of the human operator becomes less to control and more to monitor complex systems. This paper reviews the relationship between physical, cognitive, manual-control, and time-stress tasks and the subjective load experienced by an operator. The more important task variables are suggested, as are areas requiring research. Keywords
