The Use of Day Beds in Gynaecology

Abstract

Over a ten-year period more than 3,000 patients have been admitted to 12 day beds for minor gynaecological operations. Of the first 500 women, five were detained in hospital, but subsequent experience indicated that in only about 0·4% was admission necessary. Most patients approved of the scheme and underwent their operations more readily. Provided sufficient day beds, theatre accommodation and equipment, and staff are available, greater use of day beds for minor procedures would reduce both gynaecological waiting lists and costs.
