Abstract
In 13 antero-lateral cordotomies, 1 upper extremity amputation and 1 thrombosis of the anterior spinal artery reference of sensation was observed. This appeared at the same place on the opposite side as stimulated, on the analgesic side, cranially or caudally in a normally innervated area, or as a spread of sensation from the place stimulated. In some cases the reference was felt in a constant area without visible cause for its location, but there was sometimes also a reference elsewhere. The area of reference was always within a normally innervated part of the body and complete analgesia at the site of reference abolished reference to that area. Keywords
