RENAL FUNCTION IN EXPERIMENTAL ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY

Abstract
Simultaneous detns. of creatinine, urea, Na, chloride, K and phosphate clearances are made in normal and adrenalectomized dogs. In the adrenalectomized dog there is an impairment of the functions of the renal tubules concerned with the regulation of electrolyte excretion. This disturbance of tubular function is shown by decreased reab-sorption of Na and chloride from the glomerular filtrate and excessive reabsorption of K and phosphate. The renal tubules fail to maintain high conc. gradients between urine and plasma with respect to these ions. Secondarily, circulatory disturbances occur in the adrenalectomized dog which result in diminished rates of glomerular filtration as indicated by the creatinine clearance. The renal function of the adrenalectomized dog is restored to normal by the adm. of adrenal cortical extract.
