Abstract
The uptake by industry of optical sensing technology has been slow. Optical sensors are seen to be expensive or insufficiently robust to withstand the industrial environment. In this work a new type of optical sensing is described, based upon chromatic modulation. Chromatic modulation offers possibilities of building cost effective but robust sensors for use in industry and medicine. This work is presented in two parts. First, the basic concepts of chromatic modulation are introduced. In part two the application of the technology is illustrated by a number of examples. Keywords
