Abstract
The tilt angles of eutectic mixtures of cyano-biphenyl nematics on 5 degrees SiO films have been measured using a conoscopic optical technique. The results show that the tilt angle of a mixture may be calculated from the known tilt angle of the constituents and the composition. It is also shown that the nematic layers adjacent to the aligning surface retain the bulk composition. Keywords
