BLOOD DYSCRASIAS SECONDARY TO GOLD: WITH A CASE OF HYPOPLASTIC ANEMIA CURED BY SPLENECTOMY

Abstract
The case reported is a white housewife of 52 yrs. who developed a hypoplastic anemia following the admn. of 8 gold injns. for rheumatoid arthritis. With conservative measures her marrow showed no sign of regeneration; moreover, the patient was intolerant of blood transfusions, developing severe reactions despite careful typing. Her hemorrhagic tendencies increased in frequency and severity, and a splenectomy was performed as a last resort. Operation was followed by a dramatic response in the hematologic picture, and her condition was well maintained at follow-up 1 yr. later.
