An Improved Method for the Study of Nutritional Anemia in the White Rat

Abstract
[long dash]The authors'' experiments demonstrated that white rats fed only fresh whole milk secured enough minerals from their cages to prevent anemia. Those consuming large amounts of milk became anemic more quickly than those limited to small amounts. Access to feces delayed somewhat the onset of anemia. Results probably explain some of the conflicting data reported in the literature. In view of these findings, a special technique was developed. Cages were constructed of wood and glass in such a way that the animals came in contact with nothing but glass. Tops and bottoms consisted of glass rods spaced about 1/2 inch apart; sides were lined with window glass. Common glass sponge dishes were used as feed dishes. Details of procedure are given.
