Blood Tocopherol Values in Normal Human Adults and Incidence of Vitamin E Deficiency

Abstract
Of 197 factory workers surveyed in Rochester, N.Y., about 7% had less than 0.50 mg tocopherol/ 100 ml, the level below which red blood cell hemolysis tests become positive, indicating vitamin E deficiency. (Mean tocopherol concentration was 1.05 [plus or minus] 0.32 mg/100 ml). Of the other surveys summarized, the 3 giving distribution in detail showed that 12% of Holland subjects, 4% of Birmingham subjects, and 2% of British subjects had tocopherol values in the deficiency range.
