Abstract
Two main functions of ferritin are reviewed. The normal function is that of Fe storage and possibly of Fe regulation, as seen in the cells of the gastrointestinal mucosa, the placental tissue and the kidney tubule cells. The 2d and possibly abnormal function is a property of ferritin when reduced with SH compounds. "SH-ferritin" diminishes the sensitivity of the pre-capillary sphincters of the rat mesoappendix to epinephrine, but no diminution in blood pressure results. Other reported activities of SH-ferritin in irreversible shock, anti-diuresis and chronic essential hypertension are discussed. Keywords
