Abstract
Saccharomyces carlsbergensis cells sensitized with 3,4-benzo-pyrene, pyrene and berberinsulphate are inactivated by ultra-violet rays in the range from 3000-4000 A, if they are irradiated in tap-water or on glass. If they are irradiated on agar-agar or on gelatine (with or without the addition of nutrients), they are almost unaffected. A severe damage results if the medium-agar-agar, gelatine-itself contains the sensitizer.
