Abstract
A longitudinal cohort study of N = 351 Australian males, which was commenced in 1957, provided the basis for the development of an Australian index of social class. The methods and procedures by which the index was derived are outlined. The rationale for the index can be adapted for use in other studies requiring a measure of social class. Keywords
