Abstract
This paper explores the role of a short-term hospitalization program in preparing certain borderline and schizophrenic patients for intensive psychotherapy on an outpatient basis. I will begin with a description of the inpatient unit and next discuss some relevant theoretical issues regarding borderline and schizophrenic psychopathology. I will then describe how these issues are dealt with in the evaluation procedure, in individual psychotherapy, and in the milieu therapy provided by our program. Keywords
