Smoking and Abdominal Obesity

Abstract
A VENOUS thromboembolic event (VTE) is a serious disorder, and, despite modern treatment, there is a high risk of recurrences. Surgical procedures, malignant neoplasms, immobilization, pregnancy, use of oral contraceptives, and inherited thrombophilia are known to increase the risk of a VTE.1 Most previous studies1 of the risk factors for VTE have been performed on selected hospitalized patient groups, often in relation to a postoperative phase, and there are few long-term population-based studies.
