Abstract
The tips of birthcoat fibres in sheep range in shape from a definite sickle tip to one with no definite shape. The different shapes of tip are related to different types of follicle. The shapes of the tips are explained as the result of competition between follicles. The intensity of competition is not uniform, as follicles enter the follicle population in sequence. Keywords
