The Differentiation Of Interiorized And Exteriorized Secondary Stuttering

Abstract
Stutterers can be divided into two types, those who attempt to mask their stuttering, and those who attempt to avoid it by devices. The interiorized stutterer wants to avoid stuttering. The exteriorized stutterer wants to express himself. Interiorized stutterers appear to come from families that are upwardly oriented and employ child rearing practices and method of discipline particularly suited to children who are to maintain the social status of the family. Case histories show that the families of interiorized stutterers showed earlier and greater concern for speech behavior.
