A study of 1,552 older persons in selected inner city areas of New York indicates that these elderly suffer from poorer health status and higher incidence of functional incapacity than their city-wide or national peers. Ethnicity and income affect utilization of health services. Major barriers to adequate health care include lack of money, fragmentation of medical services and depersonalization of the health care system.
