THE BASIS FOR THE HISTOCHEMICAL DETECTION OF GLYCOGEN

Abstract
The formation de novo of desmoglycogen and lyoglycogen from glucose has been studied in liver slices by chemical and histochemical techniques. lnvestigations of the condition of the mitochondria in the tissue slices throughout the incubation period gave an indication of the viability of the tissue. Thus, when the mitochondria had disappeared the tissue was no longer viable and glycogenolysis exceeded glycogen synthesis. From a comparison of the level of lyoglycogen in the tissue and the histochemical picture it is concluded that only the acid soluble or lyoglycogen is demonstrated by present histochemical methods.
