An analysis of 1,470 accidents to skiers has been made in order to determine the most frequent kinds of injury and to identify the most important factors in prevention. There were 637 (43%) injuries to ligaments, especially of the ankle, 307 (22%) fractures, especially of the tibia, 242 (16%) contusions, 128 (9%) lacerations, and 27 (2%) dislocations of the shoulder. Special safety devices such as release bindings probably help to prevent accidents, but convincing data in proof of this impression are difficult to obtain. Judgement, courtesy, education, and information as to changing local conditions are most important.
