Band theory of the quantum size effect for a simple model

Abstract

It is pointed out that the current theory of the quantum size effects (QSE) assumes effectively free conduction electrons, and that this assumption is not obviously valid in this QSE regime. Exact band theoretical results are given for a simple model of the QSE. The results are similar, but not identical, to those obtained by assuming effectively free conduction electrons.
