Monobactams--structure-activity relationships leading to SQ 26,776

Abstract
Simple syntheses of a number of classes of analogues of the naturally occurring monobactam SQ 26,180 have been achieved. The absolute configuration of the biologically active enantiomer in the key series of analogues leading to the inaugural monobactam, SQ 26,776, has been determined. Systematic variation of the acyl moiety leads to structure-activity relationships that parallel those exhibited by the penicillins and cephalosporins. Based on these preliminary studies SQ 26,776, a synthetic analogue of SQ 26,180, was prepared.
