Abstract
The reaction of the functional groups in the side chains of bovine serum albumin with divinylsulfone, 4,4''-difluor-3, 3''-dinitro-diphenylsulfone, and N, N''-hexamethylene-bis-maleimide, was measured by the determination of the remaining, unreacted, reactive groups with the aid of the DNP [2,4-dinitrophenyl] method of Siepmann and Zahn. N-N''-hexamethylene-bis-maleimide reacted almost exclusively with the free SH-groups of the protein, to give a dimer, which was isolated and purified by gel filtration on Sephadex G-200.
