STUDIES OF STREPTOCOCCAL CELL WALLS IV

Abstract
L-Rhamnose was isolated from cell walls of group A streptococci grown in media containing specifically labelled glucose. 90% of the radioactivity recovered in rhamnose obtained from cells grown in 1-C14 glucose media was found in carbon 1. 80-90% of the radioactivity recovered in cell-wall rhamnose from 6-C14 glucose media was found in carbons 5 and 6. The data support the view that L-rhamnose is derived solely from D-glucose without cleavage of the glucose carbon skeleton.
