A Re-Examination of Rahn's Data on the Number of Genes in Bacteria

Abstract
Using more data than Rahn originally published (Tour. Gen. Physiol. 15: 256-277. 1931) and following Rahn''s model, maximum likelihood and the method of moments are applied to estimate the number of genes. The small-ness of the estimate (about 30 genes/cell) means either that each gene controls more cell properties than suspected or that Rahn''s model is inadequate.
