Longevity of Schistosoma hematobium and Schistosoma mansoni: Observations Based on a Case

Abstract

A case of S. hematobium and S. mansoni infection is reported in a 49-yr.-old Yemenite male, who left the endemic area in Arabia at the age of 23 and has since resided in Mechanicville, N. Y., U.S.A. Evidence is presented that this patient, 26 years after leaving the endemic focus of infection, has adult flukes of both spp. in his body, alive and ovulating. The case history shows that the infection was undoubtedly acquired in childhood and is possibly 40 yrs. old. Absence of signs and symptoms directly referable to his double infection were noted.
