Abstract
A mixture of NADH and phenazine methosulfate [which may represent a model system for oxygenase enzymes] hydroxylates aromatic compounds at acidic pH values. Hydroxylation is inhibited by catalase and by scavengers of the hydroxyl radical .**GRAPHIC**. but not by superoxide dismutase [EC 1.15.1.1]. Apparently, neither .**GRAPHIC**. is sufficiently reactive to hydroxylate aromatic rings.
