The role of DNA synthesis and mitosis in hormone-dependent differentiation.

Abstract
Mammary-gland epithelial cells must first divide in order to synthesize casein in response to insulin, hydrocortisone, and prolactin. Epithelial cells produced in medium containing insulin as the only hormone addition fail to express differentiative function. It is proposed that cell division may make a cell especially susceptible to environmental factors capable of eliciting changes in cell function.
