Abstract
It was found that SV-40 grows progressively to high titers in cultures of rhesus monkey kidney, and destroys the cell monolayers. This process takes several weeks. Incubation at reduced temperature (26 to 28°C) slows viral multiplication and consequent cell destruction. Electron microscopic observations indicate that the intranuclear development of SV-40 does not differ significantly from its development in cells in which it exerts a more rapid and distinctive cytopathic effect.
