Use of f Orbitals in Covalent Bonding

Abstract
The hybridization of atomic orbitals is considered from a group theoretical point of view. The earlier work of Kimball is extended to include atomic f‐orbitals in the hybrids. By use of the tables presented it is possible to tell at a glance what atomic orbitals can be combined to form bonding orbitals for a number of different spatial arrangements of the bonds. The strength of the hybrids is calculated for a few particularly symmetrical arrangements. Finally, the complexes (UO2)++, UCl6, and UCl4 are discussed and it is argued that f‐orbitals on the uranium atoms are used for covalent bonding.
