A Characteristic of Human Temperature Regulation.

Abstract

Rectal temp. of human subjects immersed to the level of the neck in water at 20 to 30[degree] C. declines to 35-36[degree] C. Intensity of shivering is adjusted subsequently in accordance with rate of heat loss to the water so that further body cooling is prevented. Shivering does not reach its maximum intensity until rectal temp. has become stabilized at the lower temp. level. Gastric temps. remain somewhat above rectal temp. Expts. lasted 2 or more hrs.
