Biological Value of Proteins Determined With Tetrahymena geleii H.

Abstract

Since the ciliated protozoon T. gelei utilizes unhydrolyzed protein, it can be employed to determine the biologic value of a protein by adding the protein to the protein-free basal medium of Kidder and Dewey (Physiol. Zool., 15, 136. 1943), inoculating with the protozoon, incubating, and measuring the response by electrometric titration. The biologic value of gelatin was much lower than that of casein, a protein hydrolysate or lactal-bumin.
