Observations on a Lumbered Area in Surrey from 1917 to 1925

Abstract
An area of Pinus sylvestris was cut over in 1916. The pine failed to recolonise the ground, which grew up to Betula alba. Burned patches were soon occupied by Marchantia and then invaded by Pteridium aquilinum which was followed by Betula alba, Molinia caerulea, Erica tetralix and Calluna. Lists are given of other plants.
